Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of Kenya made a state visit to India from January 10-12, 2017 on an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is the first state visit in 36 years from Kenya to India.

  • The President was accompanied by several ministers, senior officials and a high level business delegation.
  • The President Kenyatta attended the Gujarat Summit 2017 on January 10 while held officials talks with PM Modi on January 11, 2017 in New Delhi. He also had meetings with the President and Vice President.

The two countries signed 2 MoU/Agreements in the area including:

  1. Agreements in the Cooperation in the agriculture and allied sector
  2. Agreements in the Line of Credit for US$100 million for agricultural mechanization

India & Kenya Signs Agreements for Cooperation in the agriculture sector and allied sector

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyian President Uhuru Kenyatta in New Delhi on January 11, 2017, signed agreements for cooperation in agriculture sector and allied sector.

  • During the signing ceremony of agreement PM Modi stressed that broad based & wide ranging cooperation in agriculture, trade & food security will be the main priority between the two countries.

Line of Credit for USD 100 million for agricultural mechanization

Indian PM also signed an agreement on January 11, 2017 under which India will contribute $100 million Line of Credit to Kenya for agricultural mechanization.

  • Both countries decided to make stronger relation in field of economic cooperation and stressed on identifying expansion of bilateral trade among them. PM Modi said that farm mechanisation will open a new dimension of engagement between the two countries.

Apart from the agreements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta also issued a joint statement.

  • This includes to enhance cooperation in the different sectors like of maritime surveillance, maritime security, sharing of white shipping information and joint hydro graphic surveys.
  • India, Kenya also agreed to go on sharing information in counter terrorism, cyber security, combating drugs & human trafficking.
  • India & Kenya decided to buildup their security and defence cooperation.
  • India requested Kenya to participate in defence exhibitions like Aero India & DEFEXPO. Kenya to join the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). It also offered to help Kenya in the area of LED smart street lighting and LED bulbs for domestic use.
  • Both nations agreed to build a bilateral legal framework with early conclusion of Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty. An Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons and a Memorandum of Understanding on Controlling Narcotics.
